Unveiling the Watch GT 5 Features: A Deep Dive

By ANAS KHAN 26 Min Read

The Huawei Watch GT 4 came out last month. New features weren’t talked about as much as how the wearable looked. It took us a while to figure out if Huawei chose to get into the fashion business or if there’s more to it than what was said at the launch event. As usual, we put the Huawei Watch GT 4 through our tests. Here are our thoughts on it after one month.

Fast Charging Capability

The shape is the first thing that caught our eye. The Watch GT 5 features 46 mm version has a unique hexagonal body. In a world full of circles and squares, it really stands out. Our Green model is called Rainforest Green GMT. GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time, and this is the only model with 24-hour marks in the bezel.

The two colors are supposed to “represent day and night,” but the marks don’t work with any of the watch faces.Just like any other Huawei Watch, this one is a gadget for amateur sports. Last but not least, there are more games to play, such as badminton, tennis, table tennis, and padel. You can also use voice-guided running for some kinds of running.

People who run will love that they can share a track and follow it with the Huawei Health app. Also, there is something called a “smart fusion positioning algorithm” that got better as we ran it more times. During an ITRA and UTMB-certified ultramarathon on trails in Southern Europe, we wore the Watch GT 4 as our main device. It worked better than a smartphone.

Sleep Breathing Awareness was another new feature that we loved right away. It’s a cool graph that shows you when your breathing pattern breaks while you sleep. But when we looked into it more, we found that the feature could do more. The information it gives you only tells you whether your sleep was Normal, Low, Moderate, or High, and the picture is almost useless.

We have to say that no matter how hard we tried, we couldn’t figure out how to use this feature—the sleep breathing was always marked as “Normal.” The whole set of sensors and features is now known as TruSeen 5.5+. It has the standard heart rate, SpO2, menstrual cycle, and sleep quality trackers.

The way the buttons are designed might make it look like the Watch GT 4 can measure ECG, but Huawei execs told us that this feature is not available. One day, a software change might make it work, but if you are in the market right now, you shouldn’t count on it.

Audio Storage and Playback

The watch is just a Bluetooth one; it doesn’t have a SIM card slot or Wi-Fi, and you can’t connect Bluetooth extras like an external pulse monitor. At least the device lets you download music and play it while doing other things, either through the tiny speaker or earphones that are connected via Bluetooth.

The Watch GT 4 can connect to any Android phone and, of course, all Huawei phones that use HarmonyOS. The Huawei Health app and gadget could theoretically work with iPhones as well, but the functionality is so limited and the battery life is so bad that we don’t think you should buy the watch if you have an iOS device.

The battery in our 46 mm unit is 524 mAh, and the battery in our 41 mm unit is only 323 mAh. The bigger one is supposed to have a 14-day maximum battery life and an 8-day normal battery life, but the smaller one only has about half that. The picture we see now is a little different.

Huawei Watch GT 4: Design

As a whole, Huawei watches don’t have much of a consistent look from the outside. The Huawei Watch Buds and Huawei Watch D have thick, boxy plastic cases that look nothing like the Watch GT 4 models. It’s like night and day.

The Huawei Watch GT 4 models look great and have built-in mics and speakers that let you make and receive calls while wearing them. The Huawei Watch D and Watch Buds were at best strange and at worst ugly.

There are a lot of different types of traditional watches that these look like. There are dress and fashion watches with delicate circles, as well as field and dive watches. I tried a 46mm unit with a stainless steel strap. When I put on the right face, it looked a lot like a traditional dive watch. Like all GT 4 models, it has a round digital crown on the upper right corner and an additional button on the lower right corner. The touch screen was very quick, which made it easy to move around the watch. It was fun to use.

There is a lot of space for the screen, and it looks great on both sizes of the watch. The full-color AMOLED screen has a great update rate that makes scrolling easy, and the colors really pop. While not quite as bright as Apple’s Retina Display, the AMOLED screen was better than many Garmins. It put out about 600 nits of light. This is good enough for most people, but not nearly as bright as the Apple Watch Series 9, which can put out an amazing 2,000 nits.

Some watch faces, at least the free ones, are pretty bad, but I found one I liked that looked like an analog watch face and had a calendar, step count, and the moon’s current phase right on the face. It looked like a standard stopwatch and went well with the stainless steel style.

When we talk about stainless steel, I need to complain about the band change. It might be because I have short nails, but putting the stainless steel band on the watch after taking off the rubber band took 15 minutes of hard work and a lot of swearing. The process wasn’t easy, but the watch looks great with it on.

Huawei Watch GT 4: Features

The Huawei Health app is the only thing that works with the Huawei Watch GT 4. It’s not in the iOS or Google Play stores, but you can easily get it by scanning the QR code. You can change the look of your watch faces, turn on and off different message streams, and see more information about your health from that point on. The Huawei Health app is great at what it does; it gives you detailed information and useful tips about how to improve your sleep and workouts.

For example, Huawei Health told me to stop drinking coffee in the evening before bed because I have trouble sleeping. This isn’t new information, but it’s nice to have. There are a lot of workout options on the Watch GT 4. It can track your strokes and lengths as you swim in the pool or open water, and you can do them outside or inside.

The workout profiles work well with Huawei Health and come with extra features like AI-made plans that you can follow on your watch to help you train for specific goals in popular exercises like running. Both the TruSleep and TruSeen 5.5+ devices can track your heart rate and do an ECG.

There is a temperature monitor, a blood oxygen meter, and a stress meter to round out this useful set of health features. It’s not that the Huawei-native stuff is bad, but that it doesn’t work with other phones and running systems.

You can get WhatsApp and email alerts, but you can’t reply to them. Also, you won’t be able to use apps like Gmail without a lot of sideloading. Do you want Apple Maps or Google Maps on your watch? You’ll have to use Huawei’s Petal Maps, though. You also won’t be able to use contactless cards on your watch unless you live in a country that Huawei NFC payments.

As I used the watch, I noticed that more and more features were missing or didn’t work right. Getting a Huawei phone would help with this (if you don’t live in the US or Australia), but in the UK you can’t use Huawei telecoms devices on a 5G network, so the phone won’t be as useful as it could be.

Huawei Watch GT 4: Performance

The battery life of the Huawei Watch GT 4 worked as expected while I tested it. I tried it for five days, and each day, the watch lost between 5 and 10 percent of its power, based on how much I used GPS. I’m happy to say that the watch lives up to its big claims of up to 14 days. I think the average user could get 10 days out of it with a few GPS workouts thrown in.

The measures for sleep and exercise held up really well, and I was pleased with the outcomes. They take a lot of your stats (if you’re a runner) and turn them into easy numbers. These are the Running Ability Index, Training Load, and Training Index measures. You can find out if you’re running, say, 44% better than people of the same age, gender, height, and weight on Running Ability. In this way, Huawei is similar to the best Fitbit watches in that it can break down complicated numbers into small, easy-to-understand pieces of data.

For GPS tracking, I compared the Huawei Watch GT 4 to an Apple Watch Ultra 2. The major difference was that the Huawei Watch GT 4 took a lot longer to join to a network. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 charged almost instantly, but the GT 4 took at least two and a half minutes. During that time, it told me to be outside, probably where the workout starts.

It may not seem like much, but either you stand still for about 150 seconds in front of your house before you start running, or you just start running and the watch starts to follow you after the first kilometer. Aside from that, when I wore both the Watch GT 4 and the Ultra 2, they were very close in terms of heart rate and distance, so I’m happy with how accurate it is.

Features and Battery Life

The Watch GT has an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a heart rate sensor, a magnetometer, a barometer, GPS, and an ambient light sensor. It is driven by an ARM Cortex-M4 engine. It doesn’t have NFC or Wi-Fi.As we already said, the watch runs Huawei’s LiteOS, which works with both Android and iOS smartphones.

It lets you see text messages, app alerts, and turn down calls on your phone. Most of the time, the OS works well, and apps load fast. There is a little lag when you scroll through the menu, but it doesn’t get in the way. The operating system is simple to use, but it seems old, and there isn’t much you can do with it in terms of smartwatch functions.

The watch is easy to use, just like Google’s Wear OS. To get to Do Not Disturb mode, Find Phone, Lock, Show Time (which lights up the screen for five minutes), and Settings, swipe down on a button. For alerts, swipe up, and to see them all, scroll up. To get to the weather app, exercise numbers, and heart rate monitor, just swipe left or right. You don’t even have to go into the menu. Motion-wise, you can flick your wrist to turn on the screen and rest your wrist on your side to turn it off.

You can only use Huawei’s basic apps, like the barometer, compass, flashlight, timer, weather, and a few others, because you can’t add third-party apps. But you can connect your watch to Apple HealthKit and MyFitnessPal.

You can’t play as much music as you could with the Fitbit Versa. It doesn’t have any built-in storage for music and you can’t download radio apps like Pandora or Spotify. The watch also doesn’t have playing settings, even when you use your phone to listen to music.

The Watch GT’s 420mAh battery can last longer than most smartwatches and fitness trackers on the market because it has a spare operating system. Huawei says you can use it for up to two weeks. I was able to get a little more than a week, which is still better than most of the other options.

By the eighth day of wearing it, I was down to 10% power. It was constantly tracking my heart rate, had app notifications turned on, tracked my sleep every night, had the screen set to its brightest setting, and I had done two long workouts.

Conclusions

The Huawei Watch GT is a smartwatch in name only. It tracks fitness metrics like heart rate, activity, and sleep, and also provides detailed insight on the physical state of your body, making it a solid choice if you’re looking for the features of a fitness tracker in the body of a smartwatch. But for the same price, we prefer the Fitbit Versa, which provides more precise fitness tracking than the Watch GT as well as a wide selection of third-party apps, making it our Editors’ Choice. Its lightweight and slim frame is practical to wear on a daily basis, while tracking activity, heart rate, sleep, and stress levels.
